How to Tell If You Have Folliculitis
Could your symptoms be trying to warn you of an infected hair follicle?
There are so many symptoms that overlap between skin conditions that it can be hard to tell what you are dealing with. Of course, your northeast Philadelphia dermatologist, Dr. Deirdre Wood, is here to help you determine why you are experiencing the problems you are and whether it’s a result of folliculitis.
What is folliculitis and its symptoms?
Sometimes called hot tub rash or barber’s itch, this condition is a superficial infection of the hair follicle. It can be caused by a virus, fungus or bacteria. At a glance, you may have a cluster of tiny red bumps or white-headed bumps that surround the infected follicles. Some of these blisters will contain pus that may break open or crust over. Those with folliculitis often deal with red, irritated skin that may be itchy, stinging or painful.
What causes folliculitis?
Anyone can develop folliculitis, but there are many factors that can contribute to this condition, including:
- Friction from tight clothing or shaving
- Sweating or being in a hot environment
- Having other skin problems like acne or dermatitis
- Skin injuries
- Long-term antibiotic therapy
- Being overweight
- Hot tubs
