Learn about pore strips from your Northeast, Philadelphia, dermatologist.

Not sure if using pore strips is a good idea? Dr. Deirdre Wood, your Northeast Philadelphia, PA, dermatologist, shares some important pore stripsinformation about the strips.

How do pore strips work?

Pore strips use a strong adhesive to pull blackheads and whiteheads out of your pores. After applying the strips, you must wait the recommended amount of time to allow the adhesive to firmly attach to your skin before quickly removing it. If the process works correctly, the blackhead or whitehead will now be on the strip.

Can pore strips harm my skin?

Using pore strips occasionally won't harm your skin, but you'll want to make sure to limit their use to no more than once per week. You'll remove too much sebum, an oily substance that naturally lubricates skin, if you use the strips too often. As a result, your skin may become dry.

Using the strips too often may also irritate your skin and cause unsightly blemishes. If you already have a skin condition, such as rosacea, check with your dermatologist before using pore strips, as they may worsen your condition worse. Using the strips frequently can also increase your risk of developing spider veins on your face.

If the strip isn't strong enough, it may only remove the top half of the blackhead or whitehead. After treatment, your condition won't have improved and may even be worse.

How can I use pore strips safely?

Opening your pores prior to using the strips can make it easier to remove blackheads and whiteheads. Steaming is a simple way to prepare your pores. Fill a large container with very hot water and hold your face over the bowl for 10 to 15 minutes. Placing a towel over your head and the container prevents the steam from escaping too quickly. After you steam your face, apply the pore strip and follow the package instructions.
